Water Supply: Do you have hydrants? Do they work? You may have alternative firefighting water available locally.

Lightning Protection and Awareness: Lightning is incredibly powerful and can seriously injure or kill humans or destroy structures. It can strike at great distances, even when you are not currently in a storm. These sources will help you understand lightning.

Escape Plan: Every home and business should have a plan for escape routes available in case of fire or emergency. All occupants should be familiar with and practice the escape plan.

Outside Burning: Call Bexar County Fire Marshal (210-335-0300) before burning at any time. Even when the burn ban has been lifted and no formal permit is issued, it is necessary to check with the Fire Marshal to see if burning is allowed or restricted on a given day.

Lightweight construction: Strong, but lightweight, construction is especially vulnerable during a fire, and increases risk to occupant and firefighter safety, as well as increases structural damage.

Home Fire Sprinklers: Fire sprinkler systems are not included in most homes. New construction in two years may be required to include them. There is no doubt that lives are saved and property damage reduced when they are installed.

Fire extinguishers: Do you have fire extinguishers? Do you know how to properly use them? Are they located properly? Are they functional?

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Smoke and carbon monoxide are deadly. Can you detect them quickly?

Wildland Fire Safety: We're in the country. We like to have trees. Do you know how to prepare you house to be protectable during a wildland fire?
